Running up the spine of the Hand in Hand pub in Kemptown is one of the most quirkily interesting breweries in town. Hand Brew Co. is based in the 5BBL capacity tower brewery, originally installed by legendary ex-landlord, Bev Robbins, in the late 1980s. The brewery operates on gravity alone, meaning the malt has to be carried up to the top of the building by hand before every brew.
Head brewer, Jack Tavare, is a young homebrewer turned commercial brewer via the Diploma in British Brewing Technology at Sunderland’s Brewlab. He is imaginative, skilful and dedicated to producing both cask and keg which can be found both in the pub and right across the city. There’s no small-pack production as yet so drink it here and drink it fresh!
