‘You are now entering the free state of Kemptown’ – or so says the sign above the door. And The Hand in Hand is most definitely an independent-minded place.
For one thing, logic tells you that a brewery absolutely should not fit into this building – at first sight it’s just a small corner boozer with a comfortable jumble of tables and chairs. But, thanks to the imagination and determination of legendary ex-landlord, Bev Robbins, it’s also a successful brewery! Bev sadly died in 2006 but, following some time as the first home of Brighton Bier, the brewery has been given yet another lease of life as the site of Hand Brew Co.
You can always find a range of Hand brews – both keg and cask – on the bar, a wonderful mix of pub regulars and, if you’re lucky, you might just stumble into some live jazz.
